Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Scandinavia – Johannesburg

Departure from Scandinavia to Johannesburg in South Africa

Day 2: Arrival in Johannesburg

There is no time difference between Sweden and South Africa so after a good night’s flight you land in Johannesburg from where you directly take the flight to Hoedspruit or Phalaborwa near Kruger National Park. Here you meet and drive to the lodge. In the afternoon, the local Sotho tribe comes and shows and sings traditional songs and dances. The Mpala Safari Lodge is located on the Olifants River in the middle of South Africa’s pristine nature in the Limpopo Province in the northeast of the Great Kruger Park Nature Reserve, which consists of both private and national reserves. Among Mpala Safari Lodge’s facilities, the Main House is the place for cozy dinners and quiet breakfasts on the terrace overlooking the river. This is also where you relax with a drink in the evening while the wood crackles in the fireplace. You can also crawl up on the couch in the zebra room with a good book you found in the library. You will not feel bothered by alarms and people as you have a maximum of 12 guests here at the same time. (L , M )

Day 3: Bush walk and Tinshaba safari – Night safari

On the bush walk you hike in nature with Mpala’s experienced guides. It is an easy and exciting excursion where the guide tells about the animals and nature you meet along the way. He tells about the animals’ different habits, how humans manage life out in the bush, how to find food and water in the wilderness. In the afternoon when the sun starts to set, the trip goes to the beautiful Tinshaba reserve. Here it is possible to do a game drive with a quad bike, if you would rather ride in a jeep with a driver, it goes of course just as well. Here you can see buffalo, elephant, zebra, giraffe, kudu, impala, wildebeest, warthog and many other of Africa’s iconic animals. After the safari, dinner is served in the bush under the starry sky with tablecloths and candles. Of course, there is a bubble for which the author Karen Blixen said: ‘Safari without champagne is not safari,F , L , M )

Day 4: Bush walk – Visit to the Diphuti school

The day starts with another bush walk and then the journey continues to the nearby school Diphuti. Part of the profit from Mpala goes here to improve conditions for the approximately 800 students and their teachers. Mpala also donates school uniforms to the poorest children who cannot afford them. They have also, together with the authorities, planned and built classrooms and the school is almost twice as big nowadays. Today’s lunch is served at a local restaurant. ( F , L , M )

Two days with a magnificent safari and the opportunity to see buffalo, antelopes, wildebeest, zebras, cheetahs, rhinos. hippos, crocodiles, lions and with a little luck you can spot The Big Five in a single day. You spend the night at one of the park’s pleasant camps, which makes it possible to do both late afternoon safaris and morning safaris inside the park itself. In the evening, it is grilled on a traditional “boma” while watching the starry sky and listening to the sounds of the wilderness, having a beer and chatting with their newfound safari friends. Day two, the journey returns to Mpala in the middle of the day so that there is time for a dip in the pool before dinner at Mpala Safari Lodge. ( F , L , M )
