Do you fancy a little road trip through Austria? I’ll show you the most beautiful routes for a little trip through our beautiful homeland! Sometimes you don’t have to travel far to have an unforgettable vacation!

Such a small road trip through your own homeland can be really exciting – after all, you can discover completely unknown places and experience real adventures! Our beautiful alpine country has an incredible number of highlights to offer that you should not miss. So get in the car and go on a little adventure – I’ll show you the most beautiful road trip routes through Austria!

From Salzburg to Vienna

If you fancy a romantic road trip, you should take the route from Salzburg to Vienna . On the way you can expect many great sights and beautiful places where you can enjoy togetherness. The route leads via Salzburg, Bad Ischl, Gmunden and Steyr to Vienna.

Discover the beautiful Mondsee, stroll through the cute old town of St. Wolfgang and visit the Schallaburg – this route will definitely not be boring! Once in the capital, you can take a ride on the Ferris wheel and treat yourself to a delicious Sachertorte. The best view of Vienna is from the Kahlenberg, which you can easily reach by car. In order to avoid the traffic on the Westautobahn, you should use the federal highways on this route.

From Zell am See to Lake Constance

From Zell am See to Lake Constance

The next route should appeal to nature lovers in particular, because during the journey you can admire some of the most beautiful lakes and rivers in Austria and let the beautiful nature work its magic on you. Your journey begins in Zell am See at the Krimml Waterfalls , leads over the Gerlos Pass into the Zillertal and on to Lake Achensee. You can expect impressive landscapes that are reminiscent of the fjords in Norway – it is not for nothing that the area is also called “Norway of the Alps”.

From there you continue to Innsbruck, where you can see the famous Golden Roof and stroll through the picturesque old town. According to getzipcodes, your last stop is the beautiful Lake Constance in the three-country corner, which is worth a visit in both summer and winter. While you can swim in the pleasantly warm water in summer, several Christmas markets with a magical atmosphere await you in winter.

For everyone who wants to explore the south of the country, I recommend a road trip from Lienz to Graz . On this route you can discover the most beautiful corners of East Tyrol, Carinthia and Styria. You start in Lienz and follow the Drau to Carinthia. On the way you should definitely make a stop at the Galitzenklamm water adventure park and try one of the numerous via ferratas. The adventure park guarantees fun for young and old!

Take a trip to the most beautiful lakes in Austria

From there you continue to the unmistakable Weissensee, where you can take a little snack break. But don’t make yourself too comfortable, because there are other well-known Carinthian lakes waiting for you. The route takes you to the Millstättersee, the Ossiachersee and of course to the Wörthersee. After a few relaxing days at some of the most beautiful lakes in Austria, a stay in Klagenfurt should of course not be missed. Carinthia’s capital offers a cute atmosphere and is ideal as a short stopover with an overnight stay. From Klagenfurt you then continue to Graz, where your road trip ends. Here you can discover many great sights such as the clock tower, the art house and the Murinsel.

From Graz to Salzburg

The next route, which I would like to recommend to you, leads you across the country. From Graz you go via Leoben and Windischgarsten to St. Gilgen. The small community on Wolfgangsee enchants with an authentic atmosphere and is particularly worth a visit in winter. Here you should definitely pay a visit to the lookout point on the Margareten Höhe and enjoy the breathtaking view of the lake.

From St. Gilgen you continue to Salzburg, where numerous highlights such as Mirabell Palace, Hohensalzburg Fortress and Hellbrunn Palace await you. This road trip can be done in just one day, but if you want to take it easy, you can of course spend a few days in the respective places and extend the trip.

From Vienna to Melk

The route from Vienna to Melk is perfect for a short weekend day trip and is ideal for anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. Discover Krems an der Donau, Melk Abbey and the small community of Mautern.

You can also make a stop in Willendorf, where the famous Venus figure was also discovered. The Wachau round is particularly recommended in spring, when you can admire the numerous blooming gardens and visit the beautiful vineyards. In addition, there is no tourism season yet and you can enjoy your peace. Be sure to try the apricot schnapps at Winzerhof Pöchlinger!

Grossglockner High Alpine Road

Those who drive along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road will be rewarded with breathtaking views. The route, which is very popular with cyclists, is very easy to drive by car and offers many highlights such as the Krimml Water Worlds or the Gerlos Alpine Road.

Make sure to stop at the various viewpoints that offer great views of the surrounding mountains – believe me you won’t regret it! This road trip is only for the warm months, because the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is closed from November to May. If you like to ride mountain routes and, above all, are not afraid of heights, this route is just right for you.
